CHAROLAIS = CHAMPION TERMINAL SIRE

Using Research And Data Recording To Breed For Profit And Improve The New Zealand Beef Industry

Geraldine Hassall

Geraldine_Hassall.jpgGeraldine was bought up on a dairy farm in Takaka, hence her preference for cattle over sheep. At the age of 9 she shifted with her family to Waipara where her father managed a family sheep and beef farm. Being the youngest of 6 children Geraldine was brought up strongly believing in democracy. A belief she lives by.

Geraldine and Bill married in 1968 and returned to Hawarden where Bill worked as a shearer and part-time farmer. In 1970 they purchased “The Glen” as a going concern and spent the next 5 years rebuilding fences and improving the genetics in both the cattle and sheep.

With the help of their three children, Kerry, Vicki and Scott they showed their cattle at Hawarden and Christchurch Shows for several years.

After trying some polled bloodlines, which didn’t suit their breeding criteria, they chose to focus exclusively on Full French genetics. They now have a “boutique” stud with 35 cows, with an annual input of 8 –10 heifers.

Geraldine remains on Council where she uses her skills as part of a dedicated and enthusiastic team. She particularly enjoys interrelating with members and is known as the “heart” of the Society.

When she is not involved with helping Bill on the farm or doing book work, Geraldine relaxes with her gardening – especially roses. Spending time with her family is a priority, particularly her 9 grandchildren. (Unfortunately for her 3 of them now live in Australia). Walking her “Charolais” dog Arnie (a creamy white Labrador) is also a daily ritual. Geraldine and Bill also enjoy playing tennis for Hurunui Vets.

Promotion of Charolais is always high on the Hassall’s list of priorities. Through their involvement in Charolais they have had the opportunity of meeting many Charolais breeders in South America, Canada, France and Ireland as well as throughout New Zealand.

Over the past 40 years of farming there have been several downturns, some very severe. Geraldine and Bill's Charolais have often been their saving grace - not just financially but also psychologically. The Charolais have always provided a challenge.  There is always something exciting to look forward to whether it is a new calf or trying another bloodline.
